Oh, the joys of strawberry picking.
Not too many Saturdays ago, Derek and I booked a rental car and headed down the coast. While the day turned out to be a bit foggier than we anticipated, it was still quite a refreshing city escape. Our end destination was the coastal town of Santa Cruz, yet we did carve out time for one pit-stop along the way: to pick strawberries! Because, well, when you glance out the windows and your eyes land on a “u-pick” fruit sign, you just HAVE to stop.
We ended up stopping at Swanton Berry Farm, an organic farm right off the coast of Highway One. From pies and shortcakes, to fresh lemonade and jam tastings, this place had it all. And thankfully there was no strawberry shortage in sight.
As soon as we stepped out of our rented mini cooper, I instantly became intoxicated by the sweet smell of ripe berries ready to be plucked off their stems. Just a quick walk down a dirt path was all it took to be greeted by rows upon rows of berry goodness. Plump, juicy, red strawberries that practically melted in your mouth as soon as you took a bite — I would know, as I ate more than I picked. Whoops.
Ah, how I love summertime.
