Perched way up high on the southeast side of the city lies Potrero Hill. Filled with laid-back locals, cozy coffee shops, and stunning views of a perfectly framed downtown skyline, there is no wonder why this neighborhood is so beloved. Oh, and how could I forget to mention these streets are home to some of the best breweries in San Francisco — cough, cough, Anchor Steam!
After hearing and reading so many great things about this “village on the hill,” I knew it was only a matter of time before I’d have to make my way there to see what the hype was all about. So, a couple of Saturdays ago, Derek and I both wandered over.
As soon as we arrived, we were embraced by the homey feel that blanketed the air. We immediately could feel the sense of community taking place around us. People were so warm and friendly. Random smiles being exchanged. Doors held open. Eye contact made! You know, those teeny-tiny gestures of compassion that are usually forgotten about in big, bustling metropolitan areas. So to have this renewed small-town feeling was extremely refreshing.
Not to mention the quietness. Maybe due to the fact this area sits high atop a rather large hill, but the streets have this isolated feel to them. Once you arrive here, your mind instantly feels miles away from the hustle and bustle taking place below. Like I said, very relaxing!
But, you know what makes this neighborhood even more special?!
The community garden.
What an amazing place. This garden consists of 51 plots and common areas maintained by local residents. But get this, there is a HUGE waiting list to be able to “own” your own plot. You’re looking at years on the waiting list before it’s your turn. Luckily, the garden is open to the public so anyone can at least stop by and walk through it.
While the fog had not yet lifted the morning of our visit, I could instantly see just how beautiful of a place this garden is. Derek and I will definitely have to make our way back on a sunnier day, as I’ve heard the view is phenomenal.
Potrero Hill, I now see why you are such a rare gem. Thank you for welcoming us with open arms. We will most certainly be back!
