Twisting and Turning Through Switzerland on The Bernina Express

The Bernina Express is arguably one of the most scenic train rides in Europe, or for that matter, the world. And after being a passenger on this four-hour voyage from Italy to Switzerland, I’d have to agree.

When we boarded the train in the small town of Tirano, Italy, we stepped foot into a narrow, panoramic train car. Derek and I had been looking forward to this ride so much, and we were both giddy with excitement, eager for the train to take off. Looking back I don’t think my eyes were quite prepared for all the beauty that was about to be bestowed on them.

My face was glued to the train-car window for the entire four-hour journey. Over the course of the route, we said goodbye to sunny Italy and hello to icy Switzerland. We rode through 55 tunnels and 196 bridges.

Twisting and turning, we steadily made our way up the steep Alpine gradients and looked eye to eye the dynamic glaciers. As we gradually made our descent, our eyes were cast upon the rolling  green countryside and clustered hillside villages. The farmland blended together like one colorful masterpiece. The entire route was all so scenic and jam packed with breathtaking landscapes.

This had to have been the fastest four hours of my life!

While the Bernina Express runs year-round, some say it’s a trip you must take twice in your lifetime: once during the spring/summer months and once in the wintertime since the landscapes are dramatically different during each season.

If you ever have the opportunity to take this train ride, DO IT. I highly recommend this journey to anyone. If you’re interested in learning more, check out this post I wrote about our experience on POPSUGAR.
